Western Governors University

Online. Accelerated. Affordable. Accredited.

Earn your degree online from Western Governors University—a private, non-profit university founded by the governors of 19 western states to expand educational opportunities for working adults. WGU's programs are delivered online to allow learning to occur more on your schedule.

Founded in 1995, WGU is the only accredited university in the U.S. offering competency-based, online degrees. At WGU you can choose from several flexible, regionally accredited programs in Business, Information Technology, and Education (including teacher certification programs through the WGU Teachers College).

What does competency-based mean?

WGU focuses on developing a highly competent graduate, not just someone who has accumulated credit hours. In fact, WGU does not award degrees based on credit hours or required courses. Your progress is determined by your ability to pass a series of carefully designed assessments that measure your knowledge and skills as you move through your degree program. Instead of taking classes in subject areas you already know, you will focus your education on the areas in which you need to gain skills and knowledge.

You may be able to accelerate your degree progress if you commit sufficient time and are willing to study hard to prepare for your assessments. You can also take advantage of competencies you already have in your field of study.

While online, competency-based learning allows for flexibility and sometimes acceleration, WGU programs require a high degree of independence, discipline, and dedication.

Why Choose WGU?

While many other schools are now involved in online education, WGU stands out in numerous ways:

  • High-quality academic content that's relevant to your career
WGU’s programs are developed by councils of academic and industry experts to provide students with a first-rate educational experience that prepares them for today’s professional world. Students can apply their coursework immediately in their workplace.

In addition, WGU is supported by over 20 leading corporate and foundation partners—including Google, Time Warner, Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Farmers Insurance, Hewlett Packard, Sun Microsystems, Siebel, and Dell—that believe in WGU's commitment to producing highly-competent graduates.

  • Tuition that's affordable
Tuition at WGU is exceptionally modest. It is typically less that half what other reputable online universities charge. For all degree programs except the MBA programs, tuition is about $430 per month (MBA programs are about $540 per month); other universities change about that much per credit hour!
Federal financial aid is available to eligible students. Aid includes Federal Pell Grants and both subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Family Education Loans.

  • Flexibility that fits your lifestyle
The online delivery of your program gives you great flexibility to schedule your own "class" time. Because your program is online, you can learn at a time and place that fits your schedule.

  • A strong support system to help you stay on track
From enrollment to graduation, you will work with dedicated faculty mentors who serve in many capacities for you—advisor, coach, tutor, even cheerleader! Your faculty mentors will help you determine what you already know and what you will need to learn to prepare for the assessments required of your degree program.

Accreditation
Western Governors University is the only university to have received simultaneous accreditation by four regional accrediting commissions.

Currently, WGU's "home" accrediting commission is the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the same organization that accredits such leading institutions as the University of Washington, University of Oregon, University of Utah, BYU, and other public and private colleges. WGU is also nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC)
